If there is one sector that represents our region, that would be the wine sector. Years of tradition<\/strong> and culture<\/strong> guarantee the expertise<\/strong> and know-how<\/strong> of wineries<\/strong> and wine cooperatives<\/strong> in Castilla-La Mancha, as well as the quality of their wines of course.<\/p>\n

The wine sector<\/strong> currently accounts for 5% of GDP in the region, with many customs and festivals and much cultural and natural heritage<\/strong> in the region heavily based on the culture of wine. Its importance to the local economic<\/strong> fabric is unquestionable<\/strong>, with the tourism and gastronomy sectors offering a fine example<\/strong> of this as business sectors<\/strong> that are tightly intertwined with the wine sector.<\/p>\n

The cultivation<\/strong> and production<\/strong> of wine forms<\/strong> an integral part<\/strong> of the character of this region and its people. Winemaking<\/strong> is the main economic<\/strong> activity for many towns<\/strong> and villages<\/strong> in the region and some 80,000 families<\/strong> currently make a living from this sector. 484 wineries (205 of which son cooperativas) make up this sector in Castilla-La Mancha<\/strong>, with approximately 43,000 employees working on cultivation alone.<\/p>\n

Castilla-La Mancha is currently considered to be the vineyard and winery of the world.<\/strong> You might think this is something of an exaggeration. If you were to ask an American, Castilla-La Mancha would probably not be the first region to come to mind.<\/p>\n

The most recent available<\/strong> data reflect a total vineyard surface area in Spain of over 941,000 hectares<\/strong> and Castilla-La Mancha accounts for 49% of that total – 458,952 hectares. Wine in Castilla-La Mancha and the modernisation of cultivation methods have undergone significant developments in recent years. We are shifting away from our status as the largest suppliers worldwide in terms of volume and bulk sales to realising the value and extremely high quality of what we were giving away.<\/p>\n

We said before that Castilla-La Mancha is the vineyard and winery of the world. This is nothing new. Historically speaking, this region has always been a major exporter<\/strong> due its enormous production.<\/strong> For years, producers<\/strong> have been forced to sell their surpluses in bulk to avoid economic losses.<\/p>\n

This meant that for a long time both the price of the product and the perception of quality in wines from Castilla-La Mancha were undervalued both nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n

The wine sector<\/strong> has focused its efforts on reversing this situation and ensuring that the world knows about the special character, flavour and quality of wines<\/strong> from Castilla-La Mancha. Producers<\/strong> got to work innovating and improving<\/strong> facilities and production<\/strong> processes, modernising commercialisation<\/strong> efforts and reassessing the value of their wines.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

To speak of the quality<\/strong> and flavour of wines from Castilla-La Mancha<\/strong> is to speak of a unique region<\/strong> of Spain with characteristics and a climate that make it one of the best places<\/strong> in the world to grow grape vines.<\/p>\n

Its dry micro-climate<\/strong>, the limestone soil<\/strong> and the long hours of sunshine<\/strong> lead to outstanding grape development and maturation, which in turn leads to an excellent balance<\/strong> of flavours and an ability<\/strong> to prevent the proliferation of bacteria that damage grape quality. A wide variety of grapes<\/strong> are grown in Castilla-La Mancha. However, the white Air\u00e9n<\/strong> and red Bobal<\/strong> and Tempranillo<\/strong> (or Cencibel as it is known here) are the most characteristic<\/strong> of this region. WHAT IS THE CURRENT SITUATION IN THE WINE SECTOR OF CASTILLA-LA MANCHA?<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The \u201c2022-2027 Strategic Plan for the Wine Sector\u201d<\/strong><\/a>, was published recently and presented by the OIVE<\/strong> (the International Organisation of Vine and Wine in Spain). The main goal<\/strong> is for wine to recover<\/strong> the value of its exports<\/strong> in 2013 by modernising and enriching<\/strong> the sector based on sustainability<\/strong> in production and responsible consumption<\/strong>, lending greater significance to wine tourism.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The five overarching priorities<\/strong> on which the actions will focus are: quality<\/strong>, diversity,<\/strong> history,<\/strong> tradition<\/strong> and sustainability<\/strong> and innovation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is a highly ambitious plan that seeks the following by 2027: 1)<\/strong> 1) an annual domestic consumption increase of 3% to reach some 12.6 million hectolitres; 2)<\/strong> 26% of national vineyards to be environmentally friendly and reach zero net emissions by 2035 and 3)<\/strong> wine tourism growth of 5.7% with a special focus on the most depopulated parts of the country.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

For Castilla-La Mancha<\/strong>, these targets and measures are nothing new. In fact, it can be said that this is one of the regions that has been working hardest<\/strong> on this issue for many years.<\/p>\n

As we said at the beginning, the entire region is underpinned by the culture of wine.<\/strong> Dozens and dozens of wine trails can be found winding through the various villages, towns and cities of Castilla-La Mancha, revealing lesser known parts of the region, its history and its gastronomy to visitors.<\/p>\n

The land<\/strong> and production<\/strong> methods at vineyards in Castilla-La Mancha are perfect for organic farming.<\/strong> At present, we have nearly 63,000 hectares of eco-friendly vineyards<\/strong> and 239 wineries<\/strong> registered as such. However, these figures continue to grow year after year.<\/p>\n
